Education - Considering a Career?

What is the Red Seal program?

The Red Seal Program, formally known as the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program, is a program that sets common standards to assess the skills of tradespeople across Canada.

Industry is heavily involved in developing the national standard for each trade. The program is a partnership between the federal government and provinces/territories, which are responsible for apprenticeship training and trade certification in their jurisdictions.

Tradespersons who have successfully passed the Red Seal examination receive a Red Seal Endorsement (RSE) on their provincial/territorial trade certificate. Anyone holding a valid Red Seal endorsement may use RSE on their business cards and signatures (e.g. Jane or John Doe, RSE).

Red Seal Occupational Standards

Quality standards are the backbone of the Red Seal Program.

They provide all partners with industry’s guideposts for describing the trade, for designing useful and consistent apprenticeship training tools, and for developing fair and consistent tools for assessment.

Standards for the Red Seal Program have the following objectives:

  • to describe and group the tasks performed by skilled workers;
  • to identify which tasks are performed in every province and territory;
  • to develop instruments for use in the preparation of Interprovincial Red Seal examinations and assessment tools for apprenticeship and certification authorities;
  • to facilitate the mobility of apprentices and skilled workers in Canada; and,
  • to supply employers, employees, associations, industries, training institutions and governments with analyses of occupations.

Red Seal Occupational Standards outline everything that a tradesperson needs to know about their trade. This includes:

  • trade activities
  • skills and knowledge requirements
  • summary of essential skills
  • safety information
  • trends affecting the trade
  • technical terms
  • names of tools and equipment
  • acronyms

Red Seal Interprovincial Exams

Red Seal exam questions are based on the Red Seal Occupational Standard.

Industry is relied upon to develop the exam questions, based on the Skills in the Occupational Standard.

Each Red Seal trade has its own self-assessment questions, as well as an exam preparation guide.

The self-assessment tool is available to help candidates understand their readiness to challenge the Red Seal exam. It goes through all topics that are included in the trade's Red Seal Occupational Standard and asks candidates to reflect on whether they have experience and knowledge in each of them. Then, it provides a report that prioritizes the sections of the exam, based on the weighting of the sections, to help focus exam preparation most effectively.

Landscape-Horticulturist Apprenticeship Program

If you are considering a career in the landscape industry or are currently working as a landscaper, becoming an apprentice would be the first step to your Red Seal journeyperson certification.  The apprentice spends the landscape season working (about 1,500 hours) and learning with their journeyperson and then goes to school to complete the classroom training.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

If you have worked a full season in the trade, you can ask your employer if they will support you on your journey to get your Red Seal. Your employer must have someone on staff who already has their red seal. If they don't, ask them to consider having a seasoned worker (7 years or more) to write the exam and obtain their Red Seal so they can mentor you.
