If you are considering a career in the landscape industry or are currently working as a landscaper, becoming an apprentice would be the first step to your journeyperson certification. The Landscape horticulturist program is similar to other red seal trades. The apprentice spends the landscape season working and learning with their journeyperson and then comes to our classroom to complete the block (or classroom) training.

It's a bit complicated but also flexible. If you have worked a full season in the trade you can ask your employer if they will support you on your journey to get your red seal. Your employer must have someone on staff who already has their red seal. If they don't ask them to consider having a seasoned worker (7 years or more) to challenge the exam and achieve their red seal so they can mentor you.

Skilled Trades NB is offering upcoming apprenticeship training sessions for Landscape Horticulturists:
Level 3: February 17 – March 20, 2026
Level 4: March 30 – May 8, 2026
Location: NBCC Saint John
To register your employees, please contact the Central Apprenticeship Office at (506) 453-2260 or connect through their website.

Text books cost approx. $400. For those that are EI eligible, this cost is covered by government. The cost of the training is $85 per week. Upon successful completion of each level, this tuition is reimbursed to the student. For those on EI, benefits are paid during the course. There are $1000 incentive bonuses following successful completion of level 1 and 2 as well as an addition $2000 incentive after successful completion of the red seal exam. For those that are eligible there is the opportunity to receive an apprenticeship loan. click here for more information.
